Winter Preparation

The winter season is a time for reflection, renewal, and rejuvenation. We have all experienced the stress of the holidays and the long nights spent in front of the television or computer. This can leave us feeling tired and worn out. If you are looking for ways to stay active and healthy during the winter months try these tips:

1) Take a warm bubble bath with your favorite scented candles lit before bed every night. The smell will relax you and help you sleep better.

2) Set aside time each day to exercise such as walking or yoga. You will feel energized after just a few minutes!

3) Eat healthy by making sure you get enough protein in your diet (meat, chicken, fish) along with fruits and vegetables.

4) Have fun! Go outside in the cold weather and enjoy some fresh air or take your dog for a walk!

Make sure your home is properly insulated, especially if it is built with wood framing which can cause fire risk during cold weather. Keep outdoor areas free of snow and ice, clear walkways and parking lots, and remove debris from the roof to prevent water damage. If you have a pool, cover it with a tarp or plastic sheeting when temperatures dip below freezing. And make sure your pool pump is working properly before turning it on to avoid freezing water lines or other damage.

There are many things you can do to help prepare for winter.

1. Start keeping a winter journal so that you can see how long it takes the whole family to get ready and what they do in their free time.

2. Buy a snow shovel and make sure everyone knows how to use it safely.

3. Make sure the house is power washed before the first snowfall so that dirt won't get tracked into the house when it rains or snows again in the springtime.

4. Install storm windows on all doors, even if they aren't needed yet just to be safe (and save money).

5. Don't forget about your pets! Make sure their food and water is always available, and make sure they're protected from below-freezing temperatures by providing them with heated shelters indoors or out where necessary.
